Typically you'll get 1 or 2 emails when you place the order, then 
another one when it is shipped.  It seems to be fairly automated unless 
there are questions about your design.

And yes the prices can be much lower, even on low prototype quantities.  
I have a "Jack Chiclet" for my sequencer design that is 20 times less 
expensive through PCBCart than Advanced Circuits.  I mean, $32.85 each 
for 15 1.1" x 0.6" PCBs is crazy, which is the Advanced Circuits quote. 
Other places will let you panelize, but still not at those prices.
