[sdiy] Thinking Modular

since you asked what i have in my setup.

well obviously at this stage i am not using my diy setup (not yet at least) for my drum programming. things like the KLEE SEQUENCER might help change that but for now, I am still doing all my heavy sequencing in cubase, multiple ATARI ST programs (emulated...in STeam---also a GREAT BRAIN for sending out sequencer (random) data to your modular!!!) and LOGIC which is what i use the most NOW but i used to be a sworn cubase fan (but i switched to MAC)
i rarely use soft synths anymore though. and many of my drum SOUNDS come from my diy stuff. just not the sequencing of those sounds. but i want more hardware sequencers for sure.

SO what do I use in my actual synth rack? Well i like many people made the big mistake of being a broke musician during the late 90's, and as such when all the computer technology came along, i thought, well hey, i dont need to get evicted from this apartment just to keep my moog or prophet or korg or mpc or whatever WHEN ALL THESE COOL NEW VIRTUAL SYNTHS ARE COMING OUT!!

that lasted about 5 years. But then i became gainfully employed as an engineer and production/studio consultant and Production Teacher....so then i was able to start getting tired of virtual and start affording real synths again.

my first re purchase was the prophet 600. and i dare say the last (at least for awhile) as soon after that I quit smoking (one year ago) and needed a hobby to keep my hands busy. so i bought all the parts i needed to build ray wilsons WSG. took a few weeks before i could get it to work right.

that was the first. then a cracklebox. then an atari punk console. then some of the paper circuits from ciat lonbarde (Check him out!!)

and then i dived in head first and never thought about virtual versus real again as i got so into modules modules modules. and now i have little interest in anything i dont put together myself.

i have built or thrown together:

1 cgs vco( awesome. so many options...mine has what, 6 pots, 13 jacks?)
1 ray wilson vco...great but do the ian fritz mods.
1 ssm 2044 filter-so nice
1 handbuilt discrete tupperware filter--dirty and cheap
1 ray wilson ADSR-snappy and versatile
1 wogglebug...i want more. i highly recommend this. it can do so much and all on its own. no keyboard needed when you have this through a multiplier and into a bunch of cv or gate ins.
1 ian fritz chaos jerkster....read up on this...very unique. great for gates. or through a comparator or sample and hold
1 ian fritz double well...ditto...these work as weird lfos as well...or even tone gens
1 lunetta style 4040
1 lunetta style 4020
1 lunetta style 4070
1 handbuilt mixer
1 multiple
1 paia midi2cv
1 cgs utility lfo
1 cgs vca
1 handbuilt vca (13700)
1 baby ten seq
1 single chip sample and hold module
1 soundlab vco turned into a tupperware module
1 soundlab A/R turned into a module
2 negative slew sERGE diy modules
1 tupperware lmc567 ring mod
1 circuit snippets PWM module (great for bringing audio into your modular...coverts audio to pw modulated waves.
1 weird 555 module for rising and falling lfo
1 clock module with vc control
1 lag module
1 Ray wilson multiple noise/with triggers and gates...amazing module. three of 4 types of noise and more gates and triggers to drive other modules
a lot of other things i am building...some in tupperware or on the breadboard. i almost always try new things out for awhile and chain em right into the psu. (of which i use 2.) i love any cmos logic chips wired up with an R2R and plugged right into the 1/v oct in of a vco or filter. you plug in something like the woggle as a clock, and away you go. especially if you divide it down first.

i think thats it.
in the works, a wave multiplier, more dividers, a pll module, the KLEE 1 and the KLEE 2, shift register fun, and on and on.

i like vcos but probrably will only build one more for now. i am more into crazy stuff to put IN to the vco than having tons of them. i feel like i need more vcas and multiples and envelopes. and more VC controlled LFOs.

i rarely touch the keys anymore. i just let my beast help me play itself.

does this help?
