[sdiy] Thinking Modular

You might want to think about spending some time with a softsynth (lots of
free ones on the net) or maybe Nord Micromodular to get an idea of what
modules you will want. I have the Nord (it was like $275, used) and it is
awesome fun and sounds great. It or a softsynth should greatly help you
decide what modules to build and what kinds of sounds you will get once you
do. First decide what you want to do. Think about how important precision
and repeatability is to you. Are you looking for unexpected sound
discoveries or do you have sounds in your head you want to create? Certain
module architectures enable certain sound/sequence characters. Try and find
out what equipment was used to create music/sounds that interest you.

And what Dan said!

>when I start making my modular in the fall and I've come to realize that I
don't really know how many of what makes a good start for a modular. I've
poked around and seen things like the number of VCOs ranging from 3 to 9,
for example. I'm a little overwhelmed. Does anyone have any thoughts for me?
