Interfacing with an external CODEC IC is quite easily and efficiently
accomplished via the DCI interface.
More of a problem is accessing external RAM which requires lots of I/O
pins to do efficiently and without extra external components. So this
is where you will be pushed towards using surface mount packages. But
you pretty much have to go SMT to get any choice of CODEC IC anyway.
