The dsPIC33FJ64GP802 chips with on-board audio DACs that were discussed
on this list a while back have been available for about a month now.
These come in 28-pin skinny DIP packages and cost is less than $10/ea in
single qty. I bought some a few weeks back and finally got around to
trying one out the other day.
After the usual cockpit errors that occur when starting off with a new
processor I've gotten some simple audio stuff running. Performance looks
(and sounds) generally good. It's possible to get 100kHz sample rates
using only the on-chip clock oscillators, so this chip and a few
external components can be used to lash-up a fairly capable noise maker.
