I have worked with several different DSP evaluation platforms, in fact I actually did work for a semiconductors manufacturer which was selling DSPs (and their evaluation platforms, of course) and never seen anything that looks like what you would normally expect as a final product. The rush to get the chips out in the market seems to be the problem in most cases. Big companies want to have their chips even before they are fully tested, so that they can speed up with the rest of the development... time to market is the problem!!! those big companies can force the semiconductor manufacturer to have somebody (that used to be me :-) ) to help them when things do not work, but we (diyers and small companies) obviously can not :-(  and have to suffer the rush of the big players.

IMO The best DSP evaluation platforms (and tools) I have used are TI's, mainly because they do not do them directly, but have a third party to do them, I guess...
