About as low as I would go is a 20khz clock on the scan counter, which gives 312.5 scans/sec on a five-octave (6-bit) keyboard, or 3.2 milliseconds per scan. The higher the better but this is perfectly useable.

Subject: [sdiy] Keyboard scan rates?
Does anyone have specs on typical keyboard scan rates for any type
digital scan keyboard, midi or not. What's a good rate for decent
responsiveness?
Thanks.
