The innards of a piano make a really interesting effect "processor". Five
or so years ago, one of the rock bands at the time (Linkin Park maybe?)
recorded part of a track by laying a guitar amp on its back and pointing
it up at the bottom of a piano. I remember the effect as being like a
cross between a harpsichord, reverb, and chorus.
A friend of mine just ended up with a soundboard of his own (they're fun
to play directly too), and it reminded me of how cool they are. I wouldn't
want to disassemble a working piano to get one, but if I ever have the
chance to extract the soundboard from an otherwise useless piano I also
plan on converting it for my own use.
