Jim, if you're interested in a book or two, the ones I used to get a
basic working knowledge of electronics were _Basic Electronics_ by
McWhorter and Evans, and _Getting Started in Electronics_ by Forrest
Mims. The former is more about the theory, and the latter is more about
working applications, so I thought they made a good pair even if there
is a bit of overlap between them. Most of the math is basic algebra.
There is some trig in the section on AC in _Basic Electronics_, but you
can probably skip that if you're not interested.
Some of the other list members with more electronics experience might
have other recommendations, but I have a similar background to yours so
I thought I would mention the ones I used.

The problem.... well I have no EE experience/knowledge outside of the kits that I have built. Also my math skills are lacking, however I always try to resolve problems, and I'm not stupid :) I'm beginning to understand circuit diagrams (how to read them, at least) and what the the individual components do. Lovely.
