[sdiy] Harmonic bandwidth

Hi all,

I came across this recently:

http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/doc_0.html

(more at http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/doc/PADsynth/PADsynth.htm)

On this page, the author describes how to make more natural-sounding
waveforms by 'spreading' the harmonics. Single, perfectly tuned
harmonics don't sound natural. As most wavetable synths contain
waveforms built using additive synthesis of their harmonics, this is
usually what they have, and the sound sounds like a wavetable synth.

The sound examples on the 2nd page are certainly convincing. This
could be worth pursuing.

I thought this was an interesting idea. Has anyone come across it
before? Do you know any good resources to share? Do you know of any
instruments that use this technique?

Thanks!
T.
