Hopefully the original poster can comment, but I was imagining they meant
"arbitrary monophonic waveforms", as opposed to PWMing polyphonic sound
(which I imagine would have pretty unintuitive results - sort of like what
happens when you play a chord into a flip-flop-based octave divider).

Like others have discussed, I don't see why it's not possible as long as
one is okay with having a single-cycle delay as part of the process. I'm
also interested in seeing what it sounds like, so I'll do some simulations
when I get home if no one else has by then.

I doubt it will be as musically intuitive or broadly useful as some other
sound manipulation techniques, but I'm sure it will be possible to get
interesting sounds out of it in at least some cases.
