Good question. If I had to guess, I'd bet that 'oscillator slop' adds a 
small amount of pseudo-random noise to the frequency control to detune 
it slightly. If I recall, there's a patch parameter that controls the 
magnitude of slop - probably the gain and/or bandwidth of the PRN signal.

Plugging into the RJ-45 debug port might work, but I would be surprised 
if they haven't set the security bits to prevent downloading the object 
code. I know some folks at Microchip (I'm about 10 miles from HQ) and 
they take that stuff seriously - once the security bit is set you have 
to decap & DPA the die to grab the flash contents. Although I'm sure any 
grade-school kid in China can do that, it gets expensive for the rest of 
us. :)
