46 here!
Started electronics when I was 13 with an impulse purchase of
Everyday Electronics. I then voraciously read any and every
electronics mag I could afford/get my hand on. Electronics Today
International being my favourite. First synth was the Powertran
Transcendent 2000 which I bought as a kit in '79.
Went to University in 1980 to do Electronic Engineering and sold the
Transcendent in '82 to buy a 'scope to help me with my final year
project. I really needed a 'scope, but wish I hadn't had to sell the
synth to pay for it. After Uni, I got a job with the BBC which
started my career in Pro Audio. It also financed my entry back into
synths, and I bought an Oscar and Juno 6 plus a Tascam Portastudio.
Then something happened... I had the opportunity in 1986 to do a West
coast USA roadtrip, so I sold the lot to fund that...why-oh why?
Great trip, BTW.
Marriage and kids came along and that was the end of my synth
dabbling until I hit the big 40 and decided I wanted a project to get
my teeth into. It dawned on me that I'd always wanted a modular synth
and why didn't I build one? Well, after a lot of web searching I came
across numerous sites including Oakleysound and the sdiy list. That
was it; I was hooked ;->)
Cheers
Andy
