Well, I just use a small width Solder Wick and get as much solder as I can
off each end of the part. Then, I use a pair of needle-nose pliers and twist
the part off the board. 99% of the time, it just pops off without
cracking/shattering. The nickel end caps will usually still be stuck to the
pads, I then use the Solder Wick and essentially wipe the pads with the iron
pressing down on the Wick. I am not trying to preserve the original
resistor.
I then use 0.021" no-clean solder and put a *very tiny* bit of solder on one
of the pcb pads. Using tweezers, I press the part straight down on the pads
with one hand, the other I just touch the end termination with the iron.
This is enough to make the part 'stick' on the pads. I then apply a *tiny*
amount of solder to each end termination.
