[sdiy] Q about germanium signal diodes

Greets list,
I am breaking ground on my ASM-2 and have a quick question about the
germanium signal diodes which are listed in the BOM as a OA91.  The only one
of the "usual suspect" suppliers that carries anything germanium is
smallbear and they are simply listed as "germanium signal diodes NOS" so my
questions are: what are the differences between germanium diodes, would the
small bear part work, and in general why germanium in VCO's (other than the
smaller voltage drop across it).
