You can use a LFO or something instead for the interrupt event generation.

You could use a 4066 or something similar for switching.

We use similar techniques to stress-test out gear at work, both on 
electrical and optical links. Either just a generator or by programming.

I am not sure why you need it for audio-use (continuity monitoring is so 
much more difficult and also judging the effect of signal absence), but 
for telecommunication systems it strikes at a vital aspect - 
connectivity and biterror, detection thereoff and proper handling.
