"We can't go
on building sophisticated synths that have an incredible selection of
**three** or (wow!) **four** basic waveforms!! Where's the sonic
variety in that?!"
For me, the answer to this question is that an analog synthesizer has it's
own characteristic sounds, much like a clarinet or a classical guitar. The
artistic value of analog synths is precisely in their sonic limitations. I
think it is important to retain the character of analog synths, no matter
how sophisticated (i.e., digital) the control systems for these synths
become.
There is something inherently charming about making electrons dance in the
audio frequency range in interesting ways, and this charm is utterly lacking
in digitally produced sounds.
(Serious answer to a facetious question, but still...)
