The more people talk about temperature compensation, the more I think
I need to build a DCO like the Prophet 08. Then I *can* have a proper
analogue ramp wave with no aliasing *and* digital frequency stability.
After all, I haven't heard anyone slating the Prophet for not being
analogue enough, or sounding "weak" or "thin" or any of the other
rubbish people used to say about DCOs, when generally they were
talking about synths that only had one master clock source and one
oscillator per voice.
I've tried going the whole hog, but I have to say that I'm not yet
entirely convinced by my wavetable oscillators. To really remove the
aliasing completely is difficult and finishes up using up so many
processor cycles that you can't do any of the interesting stuff.
Ultimately, though, I think that has to be the way to go. We can't go
on building sophisticated synths that have an incredible selection of
**three** or (wow!) **four** basic waveforms!! Where's the sonic
variety in that?!
