I kind of surprised at the problems people have soldering in
components.  I usually cut the long leads shorter before even
inserting them into the PCB.  You can cut a bunch of leads at once if
you do it before hand.  Then after inserting the components, I just
push the leads out by about 45 degrees to hold them in place.  Then I
just flip the board over and place it on a thick folded up towel for
soldering.  After that, I cut the leads down to PCB level.  Never had
a problem doing it that way.
