Agree. Cheap processors (some Philips/NXP ARMs for ~$3 in single qty), 
widely available development tools (Mac OS X, Linux, WinXX both free and 
pro), reasonably fast processors (40 - 90 MHz for ARM7, up to 600MHz for 
high-end SoC versions depending on how much you want to spend) and 
decent peripherals.

Just don't expect fantastic performance from the low-end parts if you 
need DSP or tight/fast real-time interrupt response (see my previous 
rants about this :) ).
