You sure they keep it under their hats? I didn't do an exhaustive patent 
search on that yet, but I bet you'd find quite some information on 
uspto.gov assuming you find the right search terms (which can be a 
challenge).

Regarding older stuff, you'll e.g. find nice descriptions of Kawai's 
attempts to Fourier synthesis (read: K3) or Casio's "digital" filters 
(which to my understanding are time-discrete, but continous in value) in 
the patent database.

"roland and corporation AND vocoder" at least produces 31 rather 
music-related hits.
