Regarding C implementations, be aware, though, that the quality of the 
compilation result varies greatly depending on the maturity of the 
respective compiler.

I recently made a test with so-called slim FAT implementations and the 
6809 port of GCC and was amazed to get resulting code sizes of up to 
32kB. Looking at the code, I had the impression that manual coding would 
easily result in 4 to 8 times better results (in terms of size).
