Paul,

If youre working by hand, id personally rather make slider holes in aluminium than plastic, as the whole process is that much 
slower, and you can get a nicer finish.
Someone mentioned drilling holes along the line, and then filing the excess.  If youre really carefull you can get good results like 
this.  Ive done cutouts this way that look as if a machine made them.  Use a wider file, and do a lot of checking, and youll get a 
good result.

If youre working with machines, id still preferr the aluminium.  Plastic has a tendancy to melt and ball if youre not very carefull.
