[sdiy] SDIY xmas gifts??

Here's some links to go with John's recommendation:
The store in Woodinville: Benoit Sheet Metal:
http://www.benoitsheetmetal.com/default.asp. The website is kind of
confusing - Don't bother with the navigation buttons for products, click on
the "Complete Inventory" button (which takes you to a page that only has a
list of the items that they have pictures of) and then click on "View our
inventory list as an HTML document", which takes you to a MUCH bigger list.
I went up to Benoit on Thursday. I had one of the cheap Roper Whitney #5 Jr.
knockoffs, it was so cheap that one of the dies could be deformed with a
pair of pliers, so it wore out in a couple weeks. I went to Benoit to get a
genuine #5 and a bench clamp for it. The people there are great! They are
very nice and helpful and have a lot of great stuff in stock.

I looked at the #17, it's pretty nice, but we live in a condo so I need more
versatility. I saw an interesting bench press that had a bunch of adaptors
here:
http://www.vansantent.com/sheet_metal_machines/sheet_metal_machines.htm
I asked about it at Benoit and they confirmed that it's an excellent
machine. It is made by Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool:
http://www.mittlerbros.com/, and has various tool sets like a shear,
punches, flaring dies, even louver dies. It's only $495, and the punches &
dies are cheaper than those for the #17.

Best regards,

-> I mounted my Roper-Whitney #17 on a three foot length of 2x8". When I use
it,
-> I clamp it onto a Workmate. When it is not in use, it hides in a closet.
I'm
-> guessing that it might weigh 30 lbs. It easily pokes holes through 0.071"
6061-
-> T6 aluminum.
->
-> Whitney is probably most famous for the No. 5 Jr kit. There are Asian
copies for
-> less than $20. See Harborfreight.com
->
-> Visit www.roperwhitney.com. I found a tool distributor in Woodinville, WA
that
-> had a whole warehouse full of great old machines; hydraulic presses,
flywheel
-> presses, shears, brakes,....drool.
