Yes, Overkill.
I use a 74HC123 or if it has to be very small the 74LVC1G123
(TinyLogic part) for it. It is a retriggerable Monoflop.
Set the time constant to about 1.5 times the pulse repeptition
time and it should work. And you have a Q and /Q output.
