Hi Richard.
The only way I've found to get visible-light laser diodes for a reasonable
amount of money (other than pulling them from other devices) is to do a
group buy, e.g. what the members of http://www.laserpointerforums.com/
will do every once in awhile.
Sometimes they will show up on eBay, but usually the bare diodes there are
near-infrared.
