I've been thinking about something like that for a while now.
A good vehicle might be the Dorkbot meetings. See www.dorkbot.org. The
premise of Dorkbot is that it's "people doing strange things with
electricity." My colleague Jason Freeman in our music department set
of an "atlanta chapter" that meets at GaTech:

Many of them in Atlanta historically had some sort of musical slant,
mostly since Jason was the one who started them.
These are always good, so they might be a good place to meet up - but
more to the point, I could probably talk Jason into scheduling a
"bring and show off your cool unusual synthesizers" Dorkbot, which
would give us the use of some GaTech space with a sound system.
Anyone game? (Obviously not everyone would need to bring their synths
- just if a few folks had cool ones they wanted to show off...)
