we should say check the archives but here's the short and skinny...

A top octave synth uses a single high frequency oscillator (typically in the
MHz range) and digital dividers to generate all 12 notes of the equally
tempered scale to arbitrary precision (higher frequencies and larger divisors
get you closer).

Many string synths used this technology. It was an early way to get full
polyphony from a synth. It was also used in many organs.

The trouble is that all the notes are phase locked ... the beating will never
vary. Most people don't like the sound.  Add a lot of Chorus and it could be OK.

MAybe use a (gasp) BBD ???
