Justin,
as for the wall wart connection, one thing you might consider is a
low-pass filter.
Also think about dc-decoupling through a transformer. But then, you
are pretty much rebuilding the PSU inside your case... so is there a
point to have a separate one?
switching mode power supplies can be built to shut down if wrong AC
mains voltage is detected.
