Thanks everyone for your help.  
Lucky for me I don't throw anything away (not so lucky for the wife),
and I found a box of old dead drives with a similar part.  Same package,
slightly different part number.  
It works!

My advice:
It's probably going to be easier and cheaper to find another drive &
take
the diode out of THAT one, and put in the second drive..
