Y-ellow All.
For those who know their electronic music history, will be
saddened to learn of the passing of Tristram Cary. He died in the Royal
Adelaide Hospital on Thursday aged 82.
Cary was the co-founder of EMS and co inventor of the EMS VCS3 amongst
others. Synths which a lot of people here have tried to clone in various
ways over the years. Though his background was in classical music, he
became one of the greatest influences in modern electronic music and his
synthesis was responsible for the early sounds of Pink Floyd, Brian Eno,
The who King Crimson and others. In the Adelaide electronic music scene it
was almost impossible to move for VCS3s. The VCS3 was my first REAL synth.
Cary was born in England and became fascinated with electronically produced
sound after spending time working as a naval radar officer during World War
II. He was a friend of and worked with Robert Moog who at one time, was
promoting the VCS3 in the US. Despite being in competition with EMS. He was
also a pioneer of computer/digitally generated synthesis and together with
his EMS colleagues, presented the first computer generated musical
performance using a PDP8 mini computer live on stage.
I knew Tristram back in the 70s. His electronic music lab at the Elder
Conservatorium of the Adelaide University was both legendary and awe
inspiring. Along with everyone else who ever met him, he was one of the
greatest influences on our music.
He will be missed. But at least he and Bob can now jam with Stockhausen,
kick John Cage's ass and give Hendrix a run for his money for all eternity.
Be absolutely Icebox.
