You can use an NTE42. It's probably a relabeled 2SC1583 anyway. The ones I 
have are. Not so easy to tell when you happen to get one of the old ECG42 
numbers because I think they "house labeled" those or something.

Almost all of the NTE replacement parts are relabeled. Which is why you 
can't get CA3080's or CA3080T's in the NTE numbers anymore - because their 
lifetime supply ran out. But you can look right under the NTE number and see 
CA3080E plain as day.

My NTE43's (2SA798) are a little more obvious than my NTE42's.
