Another question is whether this SCSI to firewire thing would work:

If so, you could daisychain your synth, external HDD, (firewire)cardreader,
etc. all together with more manageable cables.
My worry about SCSI CDROM's is that the CDROM mechanisms don't last very
long and then what do you do...?  
There was at one time a SCSI to IDE bridge controller chip available from
Taiwan...  Never discovered whether it would work for this purpose.  Since I
have only a 2gig capable K2000 now only worth <$500 I just gave up and think
about other things...
