There are a number of round and square variations on that theme used in 
military and medical applications. The medical ones at least even come 
in different colours to make it obvious which plug out of several goes 
into which receptacle.

Alex, if it helps, you should be able to get some crimp D-sub connectors 
instead of soldering them. You might also consider a Centronics 
connector since they don't have pins to bend like D-sub.
