For this to work you do need to be in pattern write mode. Shift + pattern button (1, 2, or 3) (pattern button will flash to indicate pattern write mode) then select the pattern (1 - 16 main key) that you want to edit. Then hit play, then do the last step procedure.

case but still no luck.

I've never actually programmed a 909 before and am going just based  
on the manual, so user error suggestions are certainly welcomed!
