[sdiy] Oberheim DMX drum machine start up problem

Hi,
I've had an Oberheim DX for a while and yesterday I bought a DMX - it was alright at the sellers house and again when I tried it later, but now it has a problem starting up. I searched online and found another person asking about the same problem exactly:
"...I have an Oberheim DMX that won't start. When I turn the thing on, there is a message on the LED screen that says * Oberheim DMX *. It won't do anything else though, non of the buttons will work except the quantize button. When I press it, it says "Data OK" and the machine makes a beep sound. - after this non of the buttons do anything, the machine is locked up.

My DMX has the memory expansion and rev 3.2 OS, no midi. Inside was what looked like a non standard battery, a VARTA MEMPAC 102, 4.8v 100 mAh, but I've changed this for a suitable 3.6v rechargable.

If I switch it on while holding erase, it beeps, displays "! MEMORY EMPTY !" followed by the same thing described above ie it still freezes.

Any suggestions how to get it going again?
