Maybe a SSM2164 approach?
These are a quad VCA with a log response, at $5 each that's about a dollar
each log function.
You could arrange them in a feedback path for exponentiation, if you needed
it.
Now the accuracy wouldn't be enough for precision work, but certainly more
than enough for waveshaping.

There's also a method - I don't have it to hand - using a bunch of
transistors to do log/antilog conversion & generate the function X/Y raised
to Z, where xYZ all variables.
