[sdiy] Bench amp & speakers suggestions

Hi Monty,

I just put a set of Bose Companion 2 speakers on my workbench and they work
very well. I don't know if they meet all of your specs but the manual says
it will handle max input signals of 2.25V(doesn't say RMS or P/P). It has
RCA jacks for inputs but I setup a small external box with 1/4" jacks and a
switch to parallel the inputs for mono operation. I only use them for
testing new synth modules that I have built. The set was $69.00 at a
warehouse store locally. I tried several other cheap computer speakers, but
they could not compare to the frequency response of the Bose. The manual
does not say what the power output is, but for me it is plenty of power for
my work bench.

Regards,

Tim

Subject: [sdiy] Bench amp & speakers suggestions

I'm thinking about selecting an amp/speaker combination for use
on the bench rather than going live and dangerously through my
normal mixer/amp/speaker setup. Nothing audiophile grade, I
just want something that meets a few specific requirements:

   - Wide dynamic range. Possibly instrument level or lower
at the input to hotter than +4 pro w/ headroom.
   - Clamping protection for over-hot signals. Possibly adjustable.
   - Low pass filter for unintended ultrasonics (or worse).
   - Small near-field speakers. Clean, uncolored, "technical" sound.
   - Single or dual channel.
   - Headphone output as well.

Thoughts?
