Personally I've found that it's better to do fine SMT work _before_ my
afternoon cuppa. Less caffeine in my system means steadier hands. OTOH it
may be different if one is of British descent. :-)

Regarding etching PCBs for TSSOP packages, I've successfully etched a test
board with pads for one of these packges, using the toner-transfer
technique. I haven't yet attempted to solder anything to it, though. A
commercially fabricated board would have tinned pads and a solder mask which
would make the soldering job easier.
