[sdiy] Linear Pot connections

I've bought some linear pots to try on some modules and have a question.

There are three connectors on them, and they're numbered  1  2  3.  

Obviously the #2 pin is the middle connector on a round pot  :)

Does it matter which I use for #1 and #3, or do I wire it up and rotate
the whole thing 180 degrees if it's wrong?

Or is there a way of numbering the round pot pins like:
"facing the back of the pot, with the connectors on the bottom, left to
right they are #1 #2 and #3"  ?
