[sdiy] goop out of a pot

--Possibly the smoke is the carbon element burning up due to high
current/short. That would smell like burning bakelite--very simialr to
burned up resistor. That heated up the lube and out it drooled!
If the pot was not under power at the time, I would wonder if your
soldering iron has an AC short--this would be dangerous to you as well as
the pot!
