4514 + 4516 = Thomas Henry's old Super Seque, which appeared in
Polyphony mag. In 2 parts, perhaps -- or maybe that was the Super Controller.
A microprocessor is the modern way to go, of course. Up, down,
up/down, random, and many more modes, yet uses fewer chips than discrete logic.
I guess the 4514 still makes a good output demux.
