I deleted the original message, so haven't seen the actual schematic being 
discussed, but there is a diode ladder filter in "Electronic Music & 
Creative Tape Recording" by the same author (Babani Press BP51).

BP81 doesn't actually contain a proper VCF circuit, while BP51 only has an 
AR envelope generator. With both books together you could just about put 
together a synth as we know it today, with triple-BBD chorus, analogue 
sequencer...and horribly unstable VCOs!
