[sdiy] Crude sampler chip

I've got a stack of these to play with. It's a bit tricky to reclock it
(unless you're used to building MHz speed clocks, of course), but Tom
Bugs has been working on some projects with this. I expect he'll pipe up
soon about that...

Easier to work with is the 1016, which has 20 seconds of memory and a
simple resistor for the clock speed. The Mobius Trip looper project on
General Guitar Gadgets is the classic looper application of this:

But a more brave soul could look into the digital addressing functions
of the chip for cheap, noisy granular synthesis. Also, a vactoral
(optocoupled LED+photoresistor or phototransistor) input could easily
allow voltage controlled modulation (see again the Tom Bugs website) for
chorusing and other common effects.

And check the spec sheet. ISD Winbond manufactured a wide range of these
kind of chips, destined for the answering machine market, and each has
some very hackable properties.

My own ISD chip sound sculpture project involved small micro-FM
transmitters with a looping sound sample, disguised as interplanetary
insects....

You really notice the low sampling rate, though, when you try to put a
high frequency sound into it and it comes back, well....silent...

Good luck!
