[sdiy] Crude sampler chip

I was looking at this Paia kit:

and the documentation on the chip:

and wondered if anyone had worked with this chip as a (lo fi) sampler.

The chip has control for Play/Record, Reset, etc, looping ability, and
also has a External Clock input.

Has anyone ever played around with this chip for modular synth-type
applications?

Could a standard VCO be used to clock this thing?

Could standard pulses from analogue clocks/drum machines be used to
Play/Reset this?

Or is there a better place for me to start?
