As for the FM modulation by white noise - maybe band-limited white noise...

something can be achieved with white noise "colored" by a set of parametric
filters in
parallel with an adsr + vca for each... By metallic percussions, I don't
mean
bells (for
which a ringmod is adequate), but rather gong-like, of industrial sounds

by huge
pieces of metal... What I did back then was to take the audiogram of a gong
and
try to
reproduce the evolution of each visible band in freq and amp, with steep bw
for
each band.
And the result wasn't really a gong re-synthesis, but was quite interesting,
enough to make
me feel like doing more experiments (when I have time of course...).
AFAIR I also tried to set up a bank of oscillators whose FM inputs were fed
with white
noise... the result was less interesting...
