This is the way I was thinking, but in my case I envsiaged a section of
eurocard rack, with guides and a simple (like veroboard) backplane. we agree
a standard pinout using the DIN 41612 connectors, and then filters can be
plugged and played with.

I've started something like this with some synth modules, using a piece of
perfboard as a carrier/connector for small module boards. I put the power
decoupling etc on the carrier, and set up standard pins for +/-12, +/-15,
5V, grounds, keyboard control voltage, gate, trigger etc. with 32 pins there
are still plenty left.

I mend a lot of industrial control gear, and this type of thing is standard,
and the connectors survive some very hostile environments.
