It depends on the power supply. You need to check out the load
transient response specifications which defines
the output voltage deviation to a step change in the load. Typically
this the change in output voltage when
you go from a minimum load to a maximum load and maximum load to a minimum load.

Check out the application notes at National Semiconductor. They may
have some application notes about building
about increasing the output current of linear regulators.

If you want to build a SMPS I would look at the ICs from Linear Technology.

Depending on your budget you could purchase a SMPS from Vicor
(www.vicorpower.com). You can buy a DC-DC
converter or a DC-DC converter packaged with an AC frontend.
