Hi Karl,
have a look into Nationals Appnote 72, it shows a quite simple booster 
with an LM3900. http://www.national.com/an/AN/AN-72.pdf
The circuit I mean is Figure 94 on Page 43. An inverting version is 
shown on the page before that.
