[sdiy] Ideas for synthesizing an electric violin?

Barry,

This violin came from a person on our local Craigslist but I think it
is exactly the same as those on Ebay.
Fender also makes a pretty nice looking electric violin but I think it
might be more geared towards country fiddling - not sure till she gets
to try it.
However, YES, the Yamahas look like really interesting models. The
pricier ones even have a dedicated volume control for each string.
I saw their Cello too - wow! very interesting.

My wife says these el-cheapo violins are horrible in the neck. Too
small for proper fingering. She says it's also very uncomfortable
because the chin rest doesn't fit right and always slips.

I found it's sound to be obnoxiously scratchy and the pickup is a
joke. It's virtually impossible to record it. I resorted to putting a
mic up to her practice amp because going direct was just terrible
sounding and the signal level way too dynamic.

My wife likes it for practicing but I already know what she wants for x-mas ;-)
